IDSA and PIDS Statement on 2024 ID Fellowship Match
The Infectious Diseases Society of America and the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society congratulate the 316 adult physicians and 43 pediatric physicians who matched today in infectious diseases. They are joining a vital and meaningful specialty that offers many pathways and opportunities throughout their careers.
The total number of matched adult ID physicians improved from 303 in 2023 while the total number of programs filled slightly decreased from 96 in 2023 to 91 this year, but the percentage of programs filled was stable at 51%. In pediatric ID, the total number of physicians matched is up from 40 last year. The total number of pediatric ID programs filled was 25 compared to 24 in 2023. We are encouraged that this year’s results begin to reverse a decline seen in the post-pandemic era.
Nevertheless, more than 80% of counties in the United States do not have any ID expert at a time when they are needed more than ever. This shortage affects public health preparedness and ID expertise that are vital for the safety of common medical procedures such as surgeries, cancer treatments and medical device implantations.
IDSA continues to educate the public and the medical profession on the value of ID physicians and is making progress in advocacy to improve compensation while working to alleviate medical education debt, which are also areas PIDS has dedicated its focus and resources.
The next generation of ID specialists will help solve some of the biggest challenges in public health and health care — including combatting antimicrobial resistance, addressing emerging global outbreaks, confronting vaccine hesitancy and providing care to communities that are often overlooked.
On behalf of the 13,000 experts in infectious diseases represented by IDSA and the 2,600 experts in pediatric infectious diseases, we welcome the physician trainees to the specialty and appreciate the impact they will make.
