Daniel P. McQuillen, MD, FIDSA, Named IDSA President

Five new members join Board of Directors to continue the fight against COVID-19 and promote the value of ID specialists

Arlington, Virginia—Sept. 27, 2021—The Infectious Diseases Society of America is pleased to announce Daniel P. McQuillen, MD, FIDSA, as the society’s new president beginning Oct. 4. Joining Dr. McQuillen will be a team of dedicated, experienced board members and newly elected representatives who will lead IDSA’s ongoing commitment to promote excellence in patient care, education, research, public health and prevention relating to infectious diseases.

“Nearly two years into this pandemic, the critical role of physicians and scientists who specialize in infectious diseases has never been clearer,” Dr. McQuillen said. “From tracking new outbreaks to treating those with severe illness to developing effective vaccines, ID has been central to the effort to address COVID-19. During this pivotal time, it is an honor to represent the hardworking professionals who are fighting this disease and other infections in communities around the world.”

In addition to leading the society during the ongoing pandemic, Dr. McQuillen will also work with the Board of Directors to continue implementing the society’s strategic priorities. These include advancing the fight against antimicrobial resistance and advocating for greater recognition of the value of the ID specialist with the goal of achieving fair compensation and attracting the next generation of physicians and scientists to the field.

Dr. McQuillen is a senior physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Beth Israel Lahey Health - Lahey Hospital & Medical Center, where he also directs the Solid Organ Transplant Infectious Disease service, and an assistant professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. A past president of the Massachusetts Infectious Diseases Society, his interests include preventing and treating transplant infections, antimicrobial stewardship, tick-associated infections, management of C. difficile infections, HIV medicine and general ID.

An active member of IDSA for over two decades, Dr. McQuillen has served on the Board of Directors and was a member and chair of the society’s Clinical Affairs Committee and its Valuation Workgroup as well as the IDWeek Program Committee. A co-author of three research papers documenting the value of the ID specialist, he is committed to addressing one of the greatest challenges facing the specialty: fair reimbursement for infectious diseases services.
